A South Carolina driver was killed when he crashed into a tree as it toppled over, officials said.

The man was behind the wheel of a pickup truck when deputies said he “struck a tree that was falling across the road.” He was the only person in the pickup and died at the scene, according to preliminary information from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the crash at about 5:40 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25. Officials said the wreck happened on Old Jacksonboro Road, near the Adams Run community and roughly 25 miles west of Charleston.

“Deputies shut down Old Jacksonboro Road during the investigation at the scene,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release. “Crews cleared the road after 10 a.m.”

As of Thursday afternoon, an investigation into the single-vehicle crash was ongoing.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Aug. 25.
