Driver dies in head-on crash on Telegraph Road in Erie Township

ERIE TWP. — A Monroe man died in a head-on crash late Monday, April 22, on Telegraph Road in Erie Township.

Gary L. Akridge, 37, of Monroe was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash south of Erie Road, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough reported.

The crash was reported at 11:45 p.m. Monday, Goodnough said in a news release. The preliminary investigation showed Akridge was traveling northbound on Telegraph Road driving a black 1995 GMC Sierra pickup.

Accompanying Akridge was front-seat passenger Stephanie M. Bradley, 41, of Monroe. While in motion, and for unknown reasons, Akridge crossed the centerline and struck head-on a gray 2014 Chevrolet Equinox SUV driven by Ghassan S. Haddad, 58, of Dearborn. With Haddad was rear-seat passenger Asia M. Kime, 21, of Toledo.

After impact, the GMC overturned onto its right side coming to rest in the middle of the roadway. The Chevrolet came to rest in the west-side ditch of Telegraph Road. Moments later, Kaylee P. Stachowiak, 19, of Monroe was driving a white 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV northbound on Telegraph Road when she saw the GMC at rest in the roadway.

Stachowiak veered her vehicle to the west trying to avoid the pickup but could not and struck the front end of the vehicle, the release said. The GMC was pushed backwards, while still on its right side, coming to rest on the northbound shoulder of the roadway. The Jeep came to a controlled stop on the westside shoulder of Telegraph Road.

At the time of the crash, all involved were wearing their safety belts with the exception of Kime, the release said. Airbags in the GMC and Jeep did not deploy. There was airbag deployment in the Chevrolet.

Stachowiak and Bradley were transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Toledo where they were listed in stable condition, Goodnough said. Haddad and Kime were transported to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo where they are listed in stable condition.

Speed and careless driving are factors in the crash.

Members of the Bedford Township Fire Department, Erie Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Lt. Brian Quinn and Deputy Sheriffs Alec Preadmore and Steve Warren of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division.
