Driver, 44, killed after his vehicle drifts off Northern California freeway, crashes in canal

A motorist was killed Sunday night after drifting off a Yuba County freeway and into a canal, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 44-year-old driver was located just before midnight after the CHP received a call that a car had driven off southbound Highway 70 just past Feather River Boulevard in Linda.

According to investigators, the 1993 Chevrolet had “vehicle drifted off of the roadway to the right, traveled through a barbed wire fence, and collided into a canal” that is parallel to the freeway.

The man, who was a resident of Olivehurst and is expected to be identified by Yuba County’s coroner, was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The CHP said the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
