With 20 years of NFL experience under his belt, future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Drew Brees knows a thing or two about scouting talent. And while his playing days are over, the former New Orleans Saint is still keeping an eye on the next crop of rising quarterback talent.

Brees hasn’t been shy in his praise for second-year Chargers QB Justin Herbert. After attending Los Angeles minicamp as an analyst for NBC earlier this offseason, the 13-time Pro Bowler only had more positive things to say about the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year.

In a recent interview with NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico, Brees gave a memorable description of the rising NFL star.

“I don’t think I’ve seen an athlete quite like him. We played them last year, and I was impressed,” Brees said. “Then I saw him at mini-camp in OTAs and was amazed at how big and strong he is.

His forearms and hands look like he has been digging fence-post holes his entire life. He is good, smart and has those leadership qualities. You talk about building an offense around a guy, he can be a 15-year franchise guy.”

This isn’t the first time Brees lauded the No. 6 overall pick. Just last month, the former San Diego Charger (2001-05) said Herbert’s physical tools were “as good as anybody he’s ever seen” — some high praise from a QB who played against 20 years worth of the league’s premier talent.

Brees and Herbert faced off for the first and only time in Week 5 of this past season. Despite eventually falling to the Saints 30-27 in overtime, Herbert outplayed his opposing QB with 264 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Coming off of a disappointing 7-9 record, the Chargers will look to capitalize on Herbert’s unique talents heading into the 2021 season.
