DraftKings opens sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale, marking first in a PGA Tour location

The DraftKings Sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale opens to the public Friday, but the first bet at the location has already been placed. Retired Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald placed $100 on Jon Rahm, a former Arizona State University golfer, to win the 2024 WM Phoenix Open.

The sportsbook is the fourth retail sportsbook to open in the Valley, following FanDuel at Footprint Center, Caesars at Chase Field and BetMGM at State Farm Stadium. It is the first sportsbook to open at any PGA Tour tournament location.

“Having a retail sportsbook isn’t just about bets,” Greg Karamitis, general manager for North American sports betting for DraftKings, said. “It’s an all-in, immersive experience, there is a lot of excitement that comes from having a retail location.”

The sportsbook has a betting area with a counter and betting kiosks, which are only open to visitors over the age of 21. The betting portion includes 40 kiosks, seven ticket windows and rentable booths that can be reserved for parties or groups.

The remainder of the facility is a full-service restaurant and bar, with indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant and patio portion are open to customers of all ages. The facility features 3,400 square feet of video walls showing sports coverage.

Most betting done on apps, not in person

Across Arizona, the overwhelming majority of sports bets are placed on mobile apps, not in retail locations. According to data from the Arizona Department of Gaming, $345.62 million worth of bets were placed on apps in August, compared with $3.41 million placed in retail locations.

About $115.55 million worth of bets were placed on DraftKings' mobile app in August in Arizona, making it the app with the most betting volume for the month. For bets placed both on the app and in a retail location, FanDuel led Arizona, with $117.09 million worth of bets placed on its app and in its retail location combined.

The TPC location will be one of two flagship locations for DraftKings. The other is at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Daily golf course users could boost sportsbook

Unlike the other sportsbook locations, which are in or near stadiums that are only used for games and events, TPC is used year-round for golf, in addition to hosting the WM Phoenix Open.

“We hope the sportsbook will be a place where our golfing guests, local people and visitors to nearby hotels can come and enjoy the book,” Brad Williams, general manager of TPC Scottsdale said.
