Sacramento’s Downtown Roller Rink will officially open on June 28, transforming Ali Youssefi Square at 705 K St. into a “vibrant hub” for public roller skating sessions, according to a news release.

When the roller rink was announced in March, it was met with immense curiosity. One reader reached out to The Sacramento Bee’s service journalism team, which focuses on community-driven questions, to ask what the new roller rink means for the annual Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink.

In collaboration with Sacramento-based entertainment company HOF, the Downtown Sacramento Partnership will transform the space that houses the winter ice skating rink into a summer destination. Then on Sept. 17, it will be packed up for the season.

In November, the Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink will reopen in time for winter.

“Our incredible city deserves such an exciting addition, especially in an area that has often felt neglected,” said Damian Lynch, co-owner of HOF, in the release.

“We can’t wait to welcome thousands of attendees throughout the summer, and our goal is to establish a successful model for this inaugural event, ensuring that the fun continues for many summers to come,” he added.

What can I expect at downtown Sacramento roller rink?

The rink will offer a smooth surface for gliding, of course, but also space to listen to music and groove with family and friends.

“Now more than ever, it is important for city centers to invest in their communities,” said Michael Ault, executive director of Downtown Sacramento Partnership, in the news release.

“We’re eager to increase our collaboration with local creators to continue a more people-centered destination downtown, and a summertime outdoor roller rink fits that vision perfectly.”

The rink is set to offer a “unique Sacramento experience,” from pop-ups to lunchtime and after-work activities for downtown employees.

When does Sacramento’s new roller rink open?
