Downton Abbey star Michael Fox has landed his next role in an upcoming project from Vampire Academy star Louisa Connolly-Burnham.

Connolly-Burnham will write, direct and star in the project, while How to Have Sex star Mia McKenna-Bruce will also feature.

The project is currently a short, but it will be developed further into a feature film.

The story follows two young women – Kaidence and Galilee – who live in a fundamentalist and polygamous society. The society considers being queer a cardinal sin so when the two women develop feelings for each other, trouble arises.

The watchful, horrid community keep a close eye on them as the couple, dealing with young love, decide whether or not to leave this harsh life behind as it is the only life they've ever known.

Fox, who will play Jeremiah, said (via Variety): “I’m incredibly excited to be a part of this project. I love Louisa’s writing. Open-hearted, subtle and compelling. I feel very lucky to be working with such a talented group of people.”

Fox is best known for his role as Andy Parker in Downton Abbey, a role he played in series five and six of the TV show and in the two spin-off movies. Last year, Fox opened up about the devastating ending of Downton Abbey 2, which saw Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess die.

"It just feels really monumental and very special to be a part of it. And if this is the last one, it's kind of a lovely way to finish it," Fox said.

"I feel like I can think about so many different points, not just in this, in the previous film, where you just don't really feel like you have to think about the scene and about the acting, you just have to be receptive to what is actually happening in that moment."

Fans have been clamouring for a third Downton Abbey movie. Recently, Penelope Wilton said she'd be more than up for a threequel, explaining: "I think I'd come back, oh definitely. Yes. Even without Lady Grantham."
