A 'Doughnut 5K' is coming to Montclair next month — here's everything you need to know

Does carb-loading still count if you do it after the race?

Probably not, but we're about to find out for sure, because — on Sunday, December 10 — Montclair Bread Company is hosting a Doughnut 5K.

And, if you want to indulge in some free, delicious doughnuts, you're going to have to make it to the finish line.

Montclair's 10th annual Doughnut Run

Montclair Bread Co., which recently switched owners, has been hosting its locally famous "Doughnut Run" for the past decade. This year, the bakery (in association with the Trails of Miles organization) is putting on its 10th annual event — and, to celebrate, they'll be greater cash prizes than ever. The top three male and female finishers will receive $750, $300 and $200, respectively. Age group winners (15-19, 20-24, 25-29, etc.) won't get money, but will still receive recognition; each walking away with hand-crafted Run Montclair ceramic mugs.

Along with the prizes, this year's race will also include a special "Beat the Doughnut" competition where — in both the men's and women's field —one elite runner will take on the 5K course dressed up in a doughnut costume. Anyone who beats the doughnut will take home a $100 gift card to Montclair Bread Company.

So, if you think you have what it takes to destroy an oversized ring of gluten in a race, sign up.

Prefer to destroy a ring of gluten the traditional way? Still sign up. Win or lose, you'll get doughnuts either way.

A flat course with "finish-line treats"

The 10th Annual Doughnut 5K run will take off, and end, near Montclair Bread Co. on Label Street. The course is said to be "flat, fast" and perfect for PRs (personal records, if you don't speak the athlete speak). Start time is 8 a.m., with a ¼-mile Kids Doughnut Dash taking off immediately after. Like the adults, kids will receive commemorative medals and "finish-line treats."

Cost of participation in the Doughnut Run is $50/adult and $25/child. Special T-shirts, hoodies, beanies and long-sleeved shirts with the event's logo can be added for an additional price.
