Doug McDermott out Wednesday with calf strain; Aaron Nesmith upgraded to questionable

INDIANAPOLIS ― Pacers wing Doug McDermott will miss Wednesday's game against the Pelicans with a strained right calf suffered in the first half of Monday's loss to the Raptors, according to the NBA's official injury report. However, forward Aaron Nesmith has been upgraded to questionable after missing the last three games with a sprained right ankle.

McDermott, a 10th-year NBA veteran, was acquired on Feb. 8 from the Spurs as part of a three-team deal that sent guard Buddy Hield to the 76ers. He averaged over 10 points per game in three seasons with the Pacers from 2018-21, but has struggled in his second stint. In six games, he's 7-of-24 from the field, including 4-of-20 from 3-point range, and has scored 19 total points.

Nesmith, who is averaging 12.6 points per game, has missed three games since suffering his injury on Feb. 14 in Toronto. If he returns, he would likely push guard Bennedict Mathurin, who scored 34 points Monday night against Toronto, back to the second unit. With McDermott out, rookie Ben Sheppard would likely be the Pacers' other second-unit wing.
