A DoorDash driver found a toddler alone, in just a diaper and socks, on Detroit's 8 Mile Road on Sunday, police said.

The 2-year-old boy was discovered "wandering" in the area of east 8 Mile and Irvington Street at about 11:20 a.m., Detroit Police Cpl. Dan Donakowski said.

The DoorDash driver spotted the child, took him into his truck to keep him warm and called police, Donakowski said.

Emergency medical personnel and police took the toddler to a local hospital to be checked out and found his mother. The woman told police that the boy had been left alone with his 16-year-old brother and "slipped out of the front door," Donakowski said.

Police contacted Children's Protective Services and later determined that the incident was an accident, he said. The woman is not expected to face charges.

A DoorDash spokesperson said the company is "incredibly proud of this Dasher for showing such good judgment and are relieved that the child has been safely returned to his family."

The company contacted the driver "to show our tremendous appreciation for him going above and beyond while out dashing.”

The high temperature in Detroit on Sunday was 38 degrees.
