Doom Patrol Boss Promises ‘Satisfying Ending’ After 4 Wild Seasons: We’re ‘Going Out on Our Terms’

Doom Patrol fans were crushed when news broke earlier this year that the Max drama’s current fourth season — which resumes on Thursday, Oct. 12 with a pair of new episodes — will be its last. That said, we’re pleased to relay that there is a silver lining to this otherwise senseless tragedy.

“Let’s just say we had a strong-enough feeling going into the season that Season 4 might be our last,” showunner Jeremy Carver tells TVLine. “Our No. 1 priority was going out on our terms, with a satisfying ending and — most importantly — character arcs that felt considered, earned and unrushed.”

The fandom can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Doom Patrol‘s core characters will all find the closure they deserve, though Carver is quick to note that “closure” doesn’t mean the same thing to everybody. “Our fans should expect endings that are true,” he says. “That is all we can promise.”

Picking up where the first half of Season 4 left off, Thursday’s premiere finds Cliff, Vic and Jane battling their way through a pocket dimension inhabited by scissor-people, all in an attempt to stop Immortus and retrieve Larry’s longevity. Rita and Rouge also eventually join the fight, but not before sharing a few (OK, a lot more than a few) drinks in an important bonding moment.

In fact, Rita and Rouge’s tenuous friendship is fully examined in these final episodes, with Carver promising that “there are many more moves left in this extremely complicated and mature relationship. Much more drinking as well.”

Carver says the biggest challenge in putting these eight episodes together was less about how to end the series and more about how to accept that the show was ending at all.

“The most difficult gear to shift into was ‘End,'” Carver explains. “We created these characters to live together, struggle together and f–k up together, forever.”
