Star Wars actor Domhnall Gleeson has explained how his new show Alice & Jack mirrors his relationship with co-star Andrea Riseborough.

The pair play the title characters in the Channel 4 romance drama, which is set over a period of 15 years, who meet and have an instant connection, but circumstances mean they can’t quite be together.

During an appearance by the two actors on yesterday’s edition of The One Show (January 25), Gleeson revealed how the show mirrors the working relationship he has with Riseborough.

The pair have worked together on a number of projects over the years, having played romantic partners in 2010 film Never Let Me Go and then siblings in thriller Shadow Dancer in 2012.

Gleeson said: "It weirdly overlaps with this [project]. We met in our late 20s, we met on a job that was a real turning point in my life. We played boyfriend and girlfriend in Never Let Me Go. And I thought Andrea’s process was just amazing… and we’ve kind of washed in and out of each other’s lives.

"So in the same way that Alice and Jack go apart and can’t be away from each other anymore, I feel like we’ve found each other over the years on the right projects. And I think [Alice & Jack] is the culmination of that, so it feels even more special to me."

Gleeson and Riseborough are also both producers on the show, which also stars Aisling Bea and Aimee Lou Wood, and have been involved in the project for five years.

The show, described as a "love story for the ages", is created and written by Mad Men’s Victor Levin, with filming taking place in London and Gran Canaria during summer 2022.

On what viewers can expect from the upcoming six-part series, Gleeson said: "It’s funny and gorgeous, and it is about real love messing you up and you messing up real love, and trying to be happy in life."

Alice & Jack is coming to Channel 4 in February. In the US, it premieres on March 17 on PBS.
