Two dead in domestic violence incident that turns into 'gun battle' with Columbus police

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation into an officer-involved shooting Saturday evening in which a 'heavily armed' man who was a suspect in a domestic violence incident was fatally shot by Columbus police. A woman who was shot by the suspect prior to officers' arrival was found dead at a nearby residence. No Columbus police officers were injured.

Two people are dead after a domestic violence incident reportedly turned into a gun battle with Columbus police Saturday on the city's East Side, according to police.

Columbus police responded at 7:08 p.m. to a report of shots fired on the 4700 block of McAllister Avenue just off Shady Lane Road, one block south of East Main Street, police said.

Officers arrived shortly after to the intersection of McAllister Avenue and Lockwood Road, where they encountered a man who opened fire on them with a rifle. At least one officer returned fire, striking the suspect, according to a prepared release from police on Sunday morning.

Officers rendered aid until medics arrived and transported the suspect to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 7:50 p.m., police said.

While securing the scene of the shooting, officers and medics were directed to a residence on the 1000 block of Lockwood Road, where they found a woman who had been shot by the suspect before officers arrived. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:18 p.m., the media release said.

No Columbus police officers were injured in the incident, police said. The identities of the man and woman have not been released by police.

Relatives of the slain woman declined to speak with Dispatch reporters on Sunday.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to the scene to investigate, as is the case with any law enforcement officer-involved shooting in the city of Columbus.

Ohio BCI investigators and Columbus police were on the scene for several hours into the night. Columbus police are handling the investigation into the woman's homicide.
