Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill out vs Jets. How it impacts his quest for 2,000 receiving yards

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill made it a point before the season started that he wanted to be the first player in NFL history to record 2,000 receiving yards in a season.

An injury could put him in jeopardy of accomplishing that feat.

Hill is inactive for the Dolphins’ home game against the New York Jets on Sunday, giving him one fewer opportunity to hit the milestone.

Hill injured his ankle in the first quarter of Miami’s 28-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Monday. He returned in the third quarter but was not 100 percent. He did not practice all week and was listed on the team’s injury report as questionable to play Sunday.

Hill entered the week with an NFL-leading 1,542 receiving yards, which was nearly 300 yards ahead of the nearest competitor (A.J. Brown, 1,258 receiving yards). His 12 receiving touchdowns are were the most in the league entering the week, two more than Mike Evans and Courtland Sutton.

But at an average of 118.6 yards per game, Hill is now on pace for 1,898 yards over 16 games assuming he returns and plays in each of Miami’s final three games: a home game against the Dallas Cowboys (Dec. 24), a road game against the Baltimore Ravens (Dec. 31), and a home game against the Buffalo Bills (either Jan. 6 or 7).

To get to 2,000 yards, Hill would need 458 receiving yards over the final three games, an average of 152.7 yards per game.

Calvin Johnson holds the current NFL record for receiving yards in a season, with 1,964 over 16 games in the 2012 season — an average of 122.8 yards per game.
