Dolphins talk possibility of adding Dalvin Cook. And more from training camp report day

When running back Dalvin Cook was first released last month, Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey was quick to ponder the possibility of a reunion with his former Florida State teammate.

Underneath an Instagram post announcing the Minnesota Vikings’ plans to release the four-time Pro Bowler, Ramsey wrote “3 0 5” with an eye emoji beside the Miami area code.

Cook remains an unrestricted free agent and on Tuesday, the eve of the Dolphins’ first full-team training camp practice, Ramsey took a more diplomatic approach when asked about the prospects of adding the Miami native.

“Any of my friends, I always want to play on the same team as any of my friends or any elite player,” said Ramsey, who played with Cook in college for two seasons. “But that ain’t none of my business, to be honest with you. I’m with these guys that are here currently. If we add DC4 [Cook], I’ll be happy. I promise you I will. ... But right now I’m focusing on myself and my teammates who are in the building right now. And we’re going to get after it.”

The Dolphins have long been connected to Cook. Miami and Minnesota were engaged in trade talks early in the offseason, but the discussions failed to materialize into a deal. After the Vikings released Cook, the Miami Herald reported that there was mutual interest in a homecoming for Cook, who starred at Miami Central High School.

However, with the majority of the NFL opening training camp Wednesday, one of the more accomplished backs in the league is without a team — and he has said he’s in no rush to sign.

For now, the Dolphins will enter the month-long preparation for the 2023 season with their top two backs from last season — Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. — as well as a rookie runner in De’Von Achane who could carve out an early role in the offense.

“I was in San Francisco and we brought in Tevin Coleman, Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida, just to name a few guys,” said Mostert, who led Miami with a career-high 891 rushing yards last season. “They’re all starters, they’re all elite guys and they’ve made unbelievable plays in their career. Just to add someone like Dalvin would be good in the backfield. But at the end of the day, it’s more so about what’s on the team right now and the guys that we’ve got to work with and just be better as a group.

“It’d always be a bonus to add a running back in and we all learn and piggyback off each other. You see what happened last year when we did add Jeff Wilson to the mix. You see how the game went with both of us in the running back room. A lot has come from the value of adding another running back. It’s more of a running back group rather than going against each other. Because we’re all on the same team at the end of the day. That’s the approach you have to have and be a professional about it when you bring in somebody.”

Williams reports to training camp

Mostert confirmed that starting center Connor Williams reported to training camp Tuesday, as Williams’ agent previously said he would.

Williams was absent from mandatory minicamp last month as he seeks a new contract. Williams, who started every game in the 2022 season after switching from guard to center, is entering the final season of a two-year contract he signed last offseason.

“I saw Connor and it was exciting,” Mostert said. “I mean, I want to see all my guys out here. All the guys should be out here. But if it holds true and guys feel like they need to do whatever they have to do, then so be it. But it was good to see Connor out here. He’s definitely a bright guy in this offense and he’s a key aspect.”
