The Dolphins are signing veteran wide receiver Mohamed Sanu Sr. on the eve of the team’s first training camp practice, his agent Mike McCartney announced Tuesday.

Sanu, who turns 33 next month, appeared in eight games with the San Francisco 49ers last season, catching 15 passes for 177 yards. He also returned a pair of punts for 24 yards.

This will mark the third stop for Sanu — a third-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2012 NFL Draft — alongside first-year Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. In addition to his time with the 49ers in 2020 and 2021 while McDaniel was run game coordinator and then offensive coordinator, Sanu played for the Atlanta Falcons from 2016 to 2019. McDaniel was an offensive assistant with the Falcons from 2015 to 2017.

In 10 seasons, Sanu has appeared in 136 games for the Bengals, 49ers, Falcons, New England Patriots and Detroit Lions. He’s recorded 435 receptions for 4,871 yards, and 27 touchdowns. He’s also found success as a passer on trick plays, completing seven of eight passes for 233 yard and four touchdowns.

Sanu joins a crowded Dolphins receiving corps that includes second-year player Jaylen Waddle and offseason additions Tyreek Hill and Cedrick Wilson Jr. The team also drafted former Texas Tech wideout Erik Ezukanma in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft and signed veterans Trent Sherfield and River Cracraft, who also spent time with McDaniel in San Francisco. Preston Williams and Lynn Bowden Jr. also return and are expected to compete for one of the final receiver spots on the roster.

The Dolphins also announced the release of wide receiver Cody Core with a non-football injury, which leaves the team with an open spot on its 90-man roster.

Dolphins rookies reported to training camp on July 19 and veterans reported Tuesday. The Dolphins will hold their first full-team practice open to the media Wednesday.
