Dolphins now have 2 Cheetahs: Jaylen Wright also used name, will acquiesce to Tyreek Hill

MIAMI GARDENS — If you thought the Dolphins had ridiculous speed because they have a Cheetah, Saturday afternoon was an awakening.

Now they have two Cheetahs.

When the Dolphins traded up into the fourth round, they used that 120th pick on Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright. Which is where things get interesting.

In July 2021, Wright and his father created a logo for NIL purposes.

A “Cheetah Mentality” logo.

"I've always been fast," Wright said. "I mean, he started calling me Cheetah."

Timeout!

Receiver Tyreek Hill had first dibs on the nickname. Hill’s handle on social media is @cheetah. He sometimes refers to himself in the third person as Cheetah. And defensive backs probably have several other names for Hill when he does cheetah-like things on the football field.

So what to do? It’s not uncommon for newcomers to a team to negotiate with veterans over jersey numbers. But nicknames?

Actually, no negotiating will be necessary.

"I'm already knowing there's already a Cheetah on the Dolphins," Wright said. "So I'm gonna let him have that Cheetah. That's his thing."

Wright was officially clocked at 4.38 in the 40 at the NFL Combine. Unofficially, he recalled being clocked at 4.37 or even 4.26.

“I could have run faster,” he said.

Wearing a tracking device, Wright said he has been clocked at about 23.7 miles per hour. The fastest ballcarrier last year, according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, was Seattle’s DK Metcalf at 22.23. Since these stats were first recorded in 2018, the only player surpassing 23 mph was running back Raheem Mostert, the current Dolphin but with the 49ers in 2020 when he hit 23.09.

Wright plans to come up with a new nickname.

"Lightning. Flash. Something like that," Wright said.

Flash? Anybody care to check in with Dwyane Wade?
