The Miami Dolphins knew there was some uncertainty surrounding Tua Tagovailoa’s status for this weekend. His thumb injury isn’t considered serious, but apparently it’s bad enough to keep him out of action this Sunday.

According to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, the Dolphins will start Ryan Fitzpatrick this Sunday against the New York Jets.

Tagovailoa has been downgraded to doubtful for Week 12. There’s a chance he still suits up for the Dolphins, but Fitzpatrick will be running the show once again.

Ironically enough, Fitzpatrick’s last start for the Dolphins came against the Jets. He completed 18-of-27 pass attempts for 191 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Earlier this week, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores provided some insight on Tagovailoa’s injury. At the time it seemed like the No. 5 overall pick would be cleared for Sunday’s game.

“He got banged up a little bit,” Flores said. “He’s a tough kid. He’s going to do everything he can from a treatment standpoint. We’ll see. I don’t think this is something we’re too worried about. He’s better today. We’ll see how it goes.”

Miami will remain heavily favored over New York even with Fitzpatrick under center.

As for Tagovailoa, the hope is that he’ll be ready to play next weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Dolphins are 3-1 this season when Tagovailoa is the starter.
