Naming a new dog can be a challenge, and some people come up with pretty unique names. Located in Michigan, Canine College day care workers hear all kinds of names, and share videos featuring dogs named after places, foods and drinks, humans, other animals, and more. They shared a video on Saturday, March 9th of dogs with uncommon names, and some of them are pretty interesting.

Many of the names are cute, some regal, and some will leave you scratching your head. If you're like me, you'll probably be wondering about the story behind all of them!

Which name was your favorite? I thought Poggles was cute, as was Spooky. But what I really want to know is why in the world someone named their dog Buttkish! Canine College fans left nearly 4 thousand comments, many asking to hear more names. @Damaris got more than 24 thousand likes when she pointed out, "Poggles looks like a Poggles LOL!" Another commenter got nearly 9 thousand likes when they said, "Legend got tilts for days", and I laughed at Canine College's response, "You could say his tilts are…Legendary!!!"

How To Choose a Name for Your Pup

Choosing the perfect name for your pup isn't always easy. We got a new puppy recently who was a rescue, and her name was Savannah, but my kids want to change it. The thing is, we can't settle on a name! We might name her Puddles since she loves drinking out of puddles, but that's just a maybe at this point.

Here on Pet Helpful, we've shared a ton of articles that have really great name ideas for your pets. But how do you choose the perfect name? Many people choose names based on their dog's appearance or personality. Some people name their pups after a favorite celebrity (did you know that Jennifer Garner named a dog after Martha Stewart), or some other favorite thing...or maybe one of their pup's favorite things!

I don't know about you, but our family uses lots of nicknames. Sometimes when you choose a name, it morphs into something different. So consider that when choosing and make sure to do the 'nickname test' - can the name you choose be shortened? Does it make sense if you shorten it? Chances are that the nickname will become the name that your dog responds to.

If you have multiple pets, make sure that you don't name them something to similar to each other or that sound alike. It can cause a lot of confusion in the house if you do!
