Dog, 13, found alive in cave two months after going missing

Here’s an underdog story to get tails wagging.

A 13-year-old dog was found alive in a cave in rural Missouri two months after she went missing.

Jeff Bohnert said his poodle-hound mix, Abby, and his other dog, Summer, ran away from his Perryville home on June 9, and Abby never came back.

Bohnert’s search to find the dog was unsuccessful — until a group of adults and kids came across Abby during a visit to Berome Moore Cave.

“She was just lying there curled up in a ball,” one member of the group, Gerry Keene, told The Associated Press. “She lifted her head and looked at us but she didn’t respond to verbal commands. She looked like she was pretty close to being done.”

It was pitch black and 58 degrees inside the cave, and the group managed to bring the dog to safety.

Keene says he went to a few nearby homes in search of the dog’s owner, and one of the neighbors notified Bohnert.

Bohnert suspects Abby ended up in the cave after falling through a sinkhole or another hidden entrance.

Abby was only about half of her typical 50 pounds after the nearly 60-day ordeal, but has since begun to add weight and regain her voice, Bohnert said.

“It’s amazing how she’s springing back already,” Bohnert told the AP. “She’s acting like herself again.”
