Does Rep. André Carson deserve another term? Indianapolis Democrats vote today.

In Indiana’s 7th Congressional District, incumbent Democrat André Carson is the clear frontrunner as he faces off against challengers Pierre Pullins and Curtis Godfrey. On the Republican side, three candidates are fighting to make it on the November ballot.

Indianapolis area residents are voting today on who should be their respective party's nominee in the general election in Congress. For Democrats, whoever wins the primary election will likely go on to serve due to the Democratic-leaning make up of the county.

As of 6 p.m. EDT, most polls in the state have closed.

Carson has served nine terms total since filling the seat in 2007’s special election. The seat was previously held by his grandmother, Julia Carson.

Both of Carson's primary opponents have run against him in years past.

Pullins, a veteran and former warehouse worker, is running this year largely because of Carson’s voting record on the Israel-Hamas war and his belief that Carson unfairly won his congressional seat. Godfrey, a National Association for Black Veterans commander, is running in part to pass a bill he first advocated for in 2014 securing veterans benefits that died in committee.

Republican candidates include Catherine Ping, a retired army lieutenant, Philip Davis, a retired postal worker, and Gabe Whitley, a former candidate for Evansville mayor.

Ping has run for the 7th District seat four times previously: in 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2016. She came within 13 percentage points of Carson in her 2014 run.

Whitley is a controversial political figure: he was endorsed by a veterans organization which he has been accused of creating, was sued for defamation and was accused of violating Indiana election law by reporting people as campaign donors who never donated.

This story will be updated as election results are released Tuesday.
