Doctor Who star Millie Gibson has promised she has a "beautiful" future on the show.

The former Coronation Street star will begin her first full season in Doctor Who with the two-part premiere 'Space Babies' and 'The Devil's Chord' in May, after debuting in the Christmas special 'The Church on Ruby Road'.

Ahead of next month's premiere, Gibson has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that she does have a long-term future on Doctor Who.

"Russell’s given me the gift of a really beautiful story arc, not only in season 1 but in season 2 also," she said. "Her family definitely structures her beliefs and her positivity. I think because I’m playing my age as well, it was so easy to express that sort of giddiness and young energy that Doctor Who’s not seen before."

Gibson expressed hopes that her character Ruby Sunday will inspire young fans the same way she loved The Doctor's companion Amy Pond as a child.

"The thought of me being some little girl or little boy’s companion is a really special thing,” she said. “Because that was me when I was younger.”

There was some confusion over whether Gibson would be leaving the show after her first season, though that's now been officially debunked.

Russell T Davies has confirmed that Millie will be back for next year's season as well, alongside Ncuti Gatwa as The Fifteenth Doctor and new companion Varada Sethu.

"We were ordered for two years of a series off Disney, and we're delivering two years, and the Ruby Sunday story literally spans those two years," he told SFX.

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series on May 11 at midnight, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
