Past and present stars of Doctor Who are set to unite for a new radio project later this month.

As fans get excited for the show's 60th anniversary, the BBC is dropping Who Are We: Doctor Who? The Classic Years, which will be released in two parts on BBC Sounds tomorrow (October 13) and later this month on BBC Radio 2.

Presented by Jo Whiley, the first part will look at "how the changing attitudes of Britain have been reflected through the TARDIS" since the show's debut in 1963.

Touching points include Dalekmania, Dad’s Army, Mary Whitehouse, Ridley Scott, The Cybermen, Hans Zimmer, The Beatles and the JFK assassination "as the Doctor and his companions are thrown into a world of sexism, racial tensions, and the rise of fan fiction".

Fans will also be able to hear archive interviews with past Doctors such as Peter Capaldi, Patrick Troughton, David Tennant, and recent showrunners Russell T Davies, Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall.

The second part of the series will have anecdotes from many of those involved, including past stars such as Tennant, Capaldi, Matt Smith, Jodie Whittaker and Christopher Eccleston, alongside incoming Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, John Simm, Billie Piper and Kylie Minogue (via Radio Times).

Ahead of the upcoming 60th anniversary special episodes, which sees Tennant return as the Doctor, the BBC is also set to release an archive of past materials.

This includes over 800 past episodes of the show from its classic era, as well as spin-offs Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood and Class, and documentary series Doctor Who Confidential.

The archive also includes interviews with the show's cast, as well as written documents, long unheard audio, and behind-the-scenes photos.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
