Domestic Devices

Most major tool companies learned long ago that it makes economic sense to set up factories in countries where labor is cheap and laws are lax — but some of the finest tools you can buy in America are actually still made right here in America. A handful of U.S.-based toolmakers are well-known brands, although they tend to manufacture their tools stateside with globally sourced materials. Many others are small custom or specialty toolmakers. Either way, if buying domestic is important to you, you can still get just about any tool for any job made by American workers right here in the USA. Craftsman

One of the most famous brands in the tool industry, the Craftsman name has long been synonymous with Sears, but its tools are also elsewhere at stores like Ace Hardware and Lowe's. Not all of the company’s tools are made in the USA, but many are — and you can tell which ones are domestic from a special logo on the packaging, including certain power drills, lawnmowers, and tool chests. They come from plants in Tupelo, Mississippi; Sullivan, Illinois; Fort Mill and Cheraw, South Carolina; New Britain, Connecticut; and Sedalia, Missouri.

Stanley

Another famous brand, Stanley started in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1843, but over the years the company eventually outsourced much of its production overseas. Recently, however, it brought some of its production back home when it introduced a select line of tools that are made in America, such as tape measures, saws and utility knives. Like Craftsman, their made-in-the-USA line is packaged with a special logo.

DeWalt

One of the biggest names in tools, DeWalt manufactures hundreds of power tools, hand tools, and accessories — many of them made in America (with global materials). Among the U.S. assembled products are impact drivers, hammer drills, reciprocating saws, and air compressors. DeWalt launched a Made in the USA initiative in 2013, and today it boasts manufacturing facilities in seven American cities. Most recently, the company opened a plant in Greenfield, Indiana, in 2015.
