Division II regional track roundup: Pair of Vikings heading back to state meet

LEXINGTON — A pair of River Valley field event standouts earned their places in next week's state track and field championships at the University of Dayton.

Cooper Miller, a senior, finished second in the boys pole vault at Thursday's Division II regional meet at Lexington, going 14 feet, 8 inches. Ethan Lyon, another senior, was runner-up in the boys discus at 156-6.

Miller and Lyon are state meet returnees.

No other Marion-area athletes earned state berths during the first day of the regional, which included some field event finals and track semifinals for sprints, hurdles and relays, plus finals for the 4x800-meter relay. The top four in every event final earns an automatic state bid.

Fellow Viking Ben Isler tied for ninth in the boys pole vault at 12-6, while RV's Madison Ward was 15th in the girls shot put at 31-3.75. Ladon Hayes of Highland was 11th in the boys discus at 124-3, and Wyatt Davis on North Union was 12th in the boys long jump at 19-7.25.

In the girls 4x800, North Union was 13th in 10:16.89 and Highland 16th in 10:39.11. In the boys 4x800, RV was 14th in 8:32.42.

In semifinal races, the top eight moved on to Saturday's finales.

North Union's Gabby Lindsey advanced in the girls 200 by ending sixth in 25.82 and 400 by taking eighth in 59.33.

In the boys 300 hurdles, North Union's Carter Skaggs was 10th in 41.45 and Highland's Toby Rogers was 14th in 42.53.

Saturday's field event finals in Lexington start at 11 a.m. with track finals going at 12:30 p.m.
