Divine Savior volleyball 1st, Gulliver 2nd at C-M event. Plus South Plantation results and more

The Divine Savior girls’ volleyball team successfully defended its title by going 5-0 to win the C-M Cares Invitational at Archbishop McCarthy in Southwest Ranches and Chaminade-Madonna in Hollywood.

The Sharks opened the two-day tournament by beating West Broward 25-9, 25-12. They had to come from behind to defeat St. John Paul II-Boca Raton 23-25, 25-16, 15-10 and also Pine Crest 14-25, 25-20, 15-9.

Advancing to the Gold Bracket, Divine Savior dropped the first game for the third time, before beating Calvary Christian 20-25, 25-10, 15-10 in a semifinal.

Gulliver Prep also came from behind in the other semifinal to beat Chaminade-Madonna 23-25, 25-19, 15-10. The Raiders reached the Gold Bracket playoffs by defeating Carrollton 25-22, 25-12; Western 25-9, 25-19; and Cardinal Gibbons 19-25, 25-20, 17-15.

In the finals in a battle of unbeatens, Divine Savior (9-0) defeated Gulliver Prep in two games 25-20, 25-18 to become Gold Champion once again. Kalya Lopes had 12 kills, 5 digs and 1 ace in that win. Thalia Iglesias added 14 assists, 3 kills, 2 aces and 2 digs, and Carola Rodriguez totaled 10 kills, 9 digs and 1 ace.

The runner-up Raiders (8-1) went 4-1, beating Carrolton, Western, Cardinal Gibbons and Chaminade-Madonna, which took third by beating Calvary Christian 25-18, 25-21.

Divine Savior’s Thalia Iglesias was named Tournament MVP. Teammates Kayla Lopes and Carola Rodriguez were named to the All Tournament team. Gulliver Preps’ Hailey Brenner and Jackie Taylor also made that team.

South Plantation improved to 9-2 with a victory over Cooper City. The Paladins were solid on defense with several players totaling double digit digs.

They’ve also defeated Stoneman Douglas; Sterling-Baytown, Texas; St. Anthony’s-Melville, New York; Las Vegas; Pasco-Dade City; Granbury, Texas; and Nova. Their losses are to Cypress Bay and Pearce-Richardson, Texas.

Cross-country

The Ransom Everglades boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams competed in the Astronaut Invitational in Titusville.

Junior David Serra was second overall in the boys’ race, and freshman Sophia Linfield was eighth in the girls’ division.

Serra completed the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes 53.20 seconds, about 4 1/2 seconds behind Rockledge senior Devin Makousky. Ethan Sullivan, a Ransom sophomore, was 16th of 220 finishers in 17:27.50. They helped the Raiders place ninth of 27 teams.

Linfield covered the course in 20:49.70. Teammate Patricia Drulard, a junior, was 27th of 198 runners in 22:01.50. Ransom was ninth of 24 teams.
