Districts 3/4-5A area track results: Coronado's Allen Gant just misses double gold

Coming into the District 3/4-5A area track and field meet at Lowrey Field with the second-best qualifying time, Coronado's Allen Gant knew he needed to push a little harder if he wanted to take home the gold.

Gant found that extra gear Friday in the 100 dash, tying his personal record of 10.49 seconds to emerge with the victory.

"I just tried to stay relaxed and explode off the blocks," Gant said, "and have confidence coming out."

Being more dedicated to his craft, Gant said, has led to his success this season, which now includes district and area championships. Much of it is simply running every day, something he didn't do last year, to keep his body in shape for the sprints.

Gant narrowly missed on another gold medal, taking second in the 200 in 21.77. Abilene Cooper's Jaylen Parker edged Gant at the finish line, finishing in 21.72.

Ranked a three-star recruit on the football field by Rivals, Gant is still sorting out his college options on the gridiron. The Mustang cornerback said he's looking at TCU, Arizona, "trying to get to Texas A&M" and Texas Tech.

Lubbock-Cooper's Michael Dever turns disappointment into prosperity

Confusion arose from Lubbock-Cooper's Michael Dever on Friday afternoon at Lowrey Field.

Dever, by his own admission, was nervous during the boys long jump of the Districts 3/4-5A area track and field meet, scratching on his first attempt. As he awaited his second turn, the official called his name as in the hole, then skipped over him when his time came.

After some questions, and answers he didn't like, Dever's second go was ruled as a pass. He wound up scratching on his third attempt, having to settle for sixth place with a leap of 21 feet, 11 inches, in his preliminary turns.

Dever didn't have much time — actually, none at all — to stew in the disappointment. His second event of the day, the high jump, had begun. He decided to turn that frustration into focus, and it paid off for him.

After surpassing fellow Pirate Vincent Sipowicz after clearing 6-2, Dever kept going, topping out at 6-6 to claim the title.

In addition to the long jump situation, which led to tired legs at the high jump, Dever credited his coaches with keeping his mindset of completing the challenge at hand.

Notable Lubbock-area finishes

Plainview's Ava Rushing ran away with the discus title with a toss of 134 feet, 2 inches (about seven feet further than the second-place finisher). With the win, Rushing became the first Plainview track and field athlete to win an area title since Kaizha Roberts in 2017.

Lubbock High's Reese Peña had little trouble Friday, coasting to titles in the 3,200 and 1,600 runs. She was 25 seconds better than Abilene High's Marin Murry in the 3,200 and 12 seconds better than Mason Murry, also of Abilene High, in the 1,600.

Three Lubbock-Cooper athletes advanced to regionals in the high jump. Brently Preston held off teammate Niomi Wines in a jump-off at 5 feet, eight inches. Sara Goltz added a fourth-place finish. Wines added an easy win in the 200 dash.

Lubbock-Cooper's Chris Carrillo and Sione Vaea went one-two in the shot put, Carrillo having a heave of 51-2 and Vaea topping out at 50-8.

Monterey's Zion Daniels took the title in the boys 400 dash.
