District titles for Columbus cross-country and golf. Archbishop McCarthy, Braddock excel, too

The Columbus boys’ golf team continued its winning ways at the District 16-3A Tournament at Redlands Golf and Country Club in Homestead.

The Explorers combined for a winning 12-under par 276 for the program’s 24th district championship.

Columbus senior Andres Atrio took medalist honors, finishing first at 4-under (68). Almost every player on the team broke par, and senior Sebastian Kawas made a hole-in-one on Hole No.8. He used a 9-iron on the 152-yard shot.

The Archbishop McCarthy boys’ and girls’ golf teams won District 16-2A championships.

Ryan Lopez of Archbishop McCarthy took medalist honors, winning the boys’ individual district tile, and Gia Culler-Guerra of Mater Lakes Academy won the girls’ title.

Next is regionals on Monday and Tuesday at Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club in Plantation.

District 16-1A at Normandy Shores Golf Course in Miami Beach: The Ransom Everglades boys’ golf team won districts for the fourth time in six seasons.

The Raiders were led by Kobe Lopez, who fired a 1-over par 72, placing second. Teammate Nick Viana was third (+2, 73), and Hugo Stenstrom and Jesse Hellring tied for fourth (+3, 74) to help them win the title.

This marked the lowest 18-hole team district total (293) in school history.

Nicholas Prieto of Florida Christian won the individual district championship for the third consecutive season.

Nicole Sardinha won the girls’ title with 71. She and the boys’ team advance to regionals next week at Crandon Golf Club in Key Biscayne.

District 15-2A at Pompano Beach Golf Course: American Heritage-Plantation swept the team and individual titles.

District cross-country

The Braddock girls’ cross-country team won the District 8-4A title at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami.

The Bulldogs scored a perfect 15 points for the second time within a week and second time in program history. They won the Junior Orange Bowl championship five days prior with 15 points.

Annabella Cardona, a junior at Braddock, won the individual title in 20 minutes 20 seconds. By 20:32, the Bulldogs remaining four runners crossed the finish line.

Coral Gables placed second of seven teams with 66 points, and Coral Reef was third with 71 points. Sophomore Samantha Ruiz of Coral Reef was sixth of 72 runners in 20:38.

In the boys’ race, Columbus dominated with its top five runners finishing in the Top 10 for the team title. Individual champ Danny Garcia led the Explorers by covering the 3.1-mile course in 16:07, besting a field of 103 runners.

Columbus, currently ranked Top 5 in the state, will be the favorite at the regional championships on Friday also at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton. District runner-up Braddock placed its top five runners within the Top 15.
