District 10 male breakout swimmers and divers at midseason

Symmetry or not, last weekend's Iroquois Invitational is considered the traditional halfway point for District 10's swimming and diving regular season.

Last weekend's all-boys competition took place a weekend after North East hosted it's all-girls meet.

That's as good a time as any to highlight some of the varsity swimmers and divers who weren't as well known at the start of the district's 2023-24 regular season.

The list of breakout males, in alphabetical order, are:

Logan Amy, Jr., Corry

Was a four-time medalist for the Iroquois Invitational. One was for first place in the 100-yard breaststroke final, when he was timed at 1 minutes, 2.70 seconds.

Brody Caldwell, Fr., General McLane

The versatile Lancer came through as the favorite in the Iroquois Invitational’s 200 individual medley final. He completed one lap each of swimming’s four disciplines at 2:09.18.

Evan Calvert, Sr., Cathedral Prep

Has found steady success in his final season for the Ramblers. That included his three victories during Monday's 103-80 Region 3 dual win against the rival McDowell Trojans.

Calvert demonstrated his diversity during that meet. He won the 500 freestyle at 5:13.81 and also started the butterfly leg for Prep's first-place 200 medley relay.

The Ramblers have won that event the last two PIAA Class 2A meets and three times since 2019.

Nate Dorsch, So., Sharon

The best swimmer for the 2023-24 Tigers not named Mark Cattron. The team’s other distance specialist won the Iroquois Invitational’s 500 free final in 4:50.93, a meet record.

Alex Gabbard, So., Erie High

Accumulated 380.70 points over 11 dives, which was good for second place to Fairview star Aari Fox in the Iroquois Invitational’s competition at Penn State Behrend's Junker Center natatorium.

Evan Grimm, Sr., Fairview

Was a four-time victor for the Tigers at Iroquois’ meet. Two were as relay anchors.

Nick Publicover, Sr., McDowell

Has shown his diversity throughout this season for the Trojans, which included a leg of their victorious 200 free relay during Monday's Region 3 dual at Cathedral Prep.

Camden Smith, Jr., Franklin

Led the Knights to first place in the team standings of the Iroquois meet. He started for their 400 free relay, which not only won but gave them enough points to overcome Fairview for the that honor.

Isaac Smith, Fr., Harbor Creek

It's rare for a varsity athlete to simultaneously compete in swimming and diving.

That, more than such double duty for the Huskies, is what's set Smith apart from others who participate in each on a regular basis.

Smith only expected to swim this season. However, at the urging of Harbor Creek coach Maxine Lundberg, he tried diving if for no other reason than to see how he'd fare.

Based on Smith's performance at the Iroquois Invitational, it's gone better than expected. Despite no background in the sport before this season, he was the meet's bronze medalist with an 11-round score of 311.60 points.

Caleb Stover, Sr., Oil City

Was victorious as an individual (100 free at 49.93) and in a group (200 free relay at 1:33.18) at the Iroquois meet.
