How to Make Disney’s Churro Toffee Recipe at Home
There are hundreds of sweet confections sold at the Disneyland Resort, but since we can’t actually get inside the gates of the parks we’ve taken matters into our own hands. The Disneyland churro toffee has been one of the most popular items sold at the resort in the past year, and now we have a copycat recipe that tastes exactly like the real thing.
This is almost—almost—as good as the official recipe for Disney’s churros!
The recipe is super easy and uses only staple ingredients, like butter and sugar. The one tool you might need to pick up is a candy thermometer, because the toffee needs to be poured at just the right temperature to have its signature snap.
Disney’s Churro Toffee Recipe
This copycat recipe is adapted from Picky Palate.
Ingredients
4 sticks salted butter
2 cups sugar
Toppings
3 bags white chocolate chips or melting wafers
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
Directions
Step 1: Bring toffee ingredients to a boil
This is the hardest part of this whole process! It will require your full attention, too, since you’re boiling sugar. You will need a medium to large pot with high sides to ensure the sugar mixture does not boil over. To start, combine the butter, sugar and salt in the pot. Let everything melt together, stirring occasionally with a whisk or rubber spatula.
As the mixture begins to boil, continue to whisk to really incorporate all of the ingredients. Cook until the sugar mixture is dark amber and reaches 285° F.
Step 2: Pour toffee out
When the sugar mixture reaches the proper temperature, pour everything out slowly onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. I found that a half-sheet tray like this works best.
Step 3: Score the toffee
If you want your churro toffee to look just like the pieces you can get at Disneyland, have a plastic knife on standby. After pouring, let the toffee set up for about two minutes, then run the knife through the toffee, making large squares. Make sure to run the knife over each line at least three time to ensure the toffee will break cleanly after it has completely set up.
Place your tray in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes to allow the toffee to cool and set completely.
If you want a more traditional looking toffee, leave the slabs of toffee alone and place the tray directly in the refrigerator.
Step 4: Break and dip
When you pull your cooled toffee out of the fridge, you’ll need to break the toffee into pieces. If you chose the Disneyland look, be careful to break the toffee right along the lines you created with the plastic knife. If you chose the more traditional slab look, use your hands to carefully break the toffee into smaller pieces.
Then, melt your white chocolate in a bowl. Dip each piece of toffee into the chocolate and place on a fresh tray lined with parchment paper. While the chocolate is still warm and melty, cover the toffee in cinnamon sugar. (This is a step that kids will love to help with!)
When each piece has been dipped and covered in cinnamon sugar, place the tray back in the refrigerator for about one hour. This will allow the chocolate coating to harden.
Step 5: Enjoy!
When the chocolate is solid, take each piece off the tray and shake off any excess cinnamon sugar. You can store the toffee pieces in an airtight container for up to two weeks, but we doubt it will last that long!
How to Recreate the Disney Experience at Home
Even though Disneyland hasn’t fully reopened yet (the Downtown Disney District is open, but not the theme parks or hotels) you can still have a Disneyland experience at home. After making your churro toffee, let everyone in your family grab a few pieces before watching a Disney movie, riding a few of your favorite rides virtually or even catching a fireworks show. You may not be able to visit Disneyland in person, but you can see what Disney looked like through the decades, too.
If you’re still missing the Disney parks after that, try out a few of the other recipes that Disney has shared, like Mickey pretzels!
