Discotek Just Announced A Bunch Of New Anime Remasters

Magical Girl Nayoha

Discotek Media has become somewhat of a household name for anime fans interested in physical media, particularly for fans of older anime. It specializes in restoring and re-releasing older anime (and some non-anime) movies and series – like the recently announced Digimon movie remasters – and it just held a big presentation showing off its next batch of releases.

In a very cumbersomely titled livestream – A Not So Very Spooktacular Discotek Day Livestream – Discotek revealed a host of new anime that it’s set to release in the coming months and years. Some of these are quite well known and highly anticipated, while others are on the smaller side. We’ve picked out some of the ones we think are most interesting, but we encourage you to check out the full thread on Twitter — there’s a lot that we don’t have the time to mention.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is an absolute classic of the magical girl genre. A spinoff of the Triangle Heart series, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ran for 13 episodes in late 2004, and was subsequently dubbed into English in 2008.

All 13 episodes, upscaled to 1080p with the same upscale used in the recent Japanese release, will be released by Discotek in 2024. It will have the original Japanese audio and the Bang Zoom! English dubbed audio, with some extras that are yet to be announced.

Hand Maid May

Hand Maid May is a 2000 harem anime that tells the story of a robotic cyberdoll named May and its owner, second-year engineering student Kazuya Saotome. It’s a little bit of a strange one, but it’s well-loved by anime fans.

Discotek’s release is a newly restored upscale that it says is still a bit rough, but much better than anything that’s been released previously. It includes all 10 episodes, plus the OVA, plus a bunch of bonuses like clean opening and ending segments, promo clips, and more. It’s due out in 2024.

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure

This classic 1999 mecha series has definitely flown under the radar in the West, despite having been licensed by Geneon for the US. Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure has a little bit of comedy, a lot of heart, and some mind-bending storylines.

Discotek’s release, due in 2024, will be in standard definition – no upscale here – but includes Japanese and English audio, improved subtitles, and clean openings and endings. It also includes some character messages for the first time, and a few extra bonuses Discotek found on the old DCDs.

Lupin the 3rd: Sweet Lost Night

Discotek does a lot of Lupin the 3rd releases, and it tends to do a great job with them. This next one looks to be no different, with a newly restored master to the TV special Sweet Lost Night. As noted by Discotek, there are only 5 specials left to release in English, so we’re in the endgame for this one.

Lupin the 3rd: Sweet Lost Night will be released by Discotek in 2024, with TV commercials and liner notes as extras. It’ll only be available in Japanese, with English subtitles, as with previous TV specials.

Kurokami

Kurokami was the first ever simul-dubbed series, and Discotek’s blu-ray release will have both the English and Japanese languages available. It’s sometimes called Black God, and tells the story of a high school student who makes a contract with a mysterious being with curious powers.

Discotek says the new release looks “so much nicer” than previous releases, and is due out in 2024.

Fist of the North Star: The Legend of the True Savior: The Legend of Kenshiro

This is an exciting one — a Fist of the North Star movie that has previously never been dubbed. Now, it’s got a new one from Sound Cadence, but also comes with the Japanese dub and subtitles. The cast list includes voice talent from Robbie Daymond, Patrick Seitz, Xantha Huynh, and more.

Like almost everything else here, it’s due out in 2024.

There are so many more announcements – including Lovely Complex, IGPX, Rainbow, Chie the Brat, Puss n’ Boots, and so much more. Watch the full stream for yourself if you’re interested, there’s some great announcements in there but way too many to list them all.
