Dillon Morlock headlines three local Div. II state discus qualifiers

AUSTINTOWN — Dillon Morlock wasted little time Thursday locking up his third straight state berth in the discus.

The Norwayne senior, who currently leads the country in both the shot put and discus, had the top throw of the day on his very first attempt, leading a trio of local throwers at the Austintown Division II Regional.

Morlock stepped into the ring to start the day with a 188-foot toss to win the event and secure a spot at next week’s OHSAA State Championships in Dayton. The reigning state champ had three other throws over 180 feet on the day.

He won’t be alone, wither, as Orrville junior Talon Beichler was second with a mark of 162-11, one that also came in the preliminary round, while Norwayne junior Brandt Morlock took third with a 159-7.

A pair of area athletes also advanced to state in the pole vault with personal-record marks. Chippewa’s Alex Rodriguez cleared 14 feet to take second overall and Orrville’s Caden Race (13-8) was fourth.

In another D-II Regional at Muskingum University, West Holmes opened with a handful of athletes competing in finals.

The girls 4x800-meter relay team of Katherine Kaster, Zora Starner, Lexy Starner, and Noelle Smith came up just shy of advancing after registering a seventh-place finish in 9:57.64.
