The tremor, more than 4 miles southwest of Peapack-Gladstone in Somerset County, is one of 18 aftershocks since the 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook up the region shortly before 10:30 a.m. Friday, according to the federal agency late Friday night. It was originally listed as as 4.0, but changed to 3.8 a short time later after further study.

The epicenter of the original earthquake was in Whitehouse Station, Hunterdon County, at 10:23 a.m. Friday.

This aftershock was stronger than most earthquakes in New Jersey, which tend to be in the 2- to 3-magnitude range.

Before Friday, the last earthquake in the Garden State was on March 15, measuring a magnitude 2.2 in the very same area — near Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County, according to the USGS.

Prior to March 15, the last earthquake in New Jersey was a 1.7-magnitude that occurred near the Lake Telemark section of Roxbury in Morris County in August 2022, according to the survey.

There have also been earthquakes at the Jersey Shore: a 2.2-magnitude at Tuckerton in June 2021; a 3.1-magnitude near Marlboro in September 2020; and a 1.4-magnitude that occurred near Keansburg in August 2017.

One of the strongest earthquakes at the Jersey Shore was a magnitude 3.8 quake that struck near Freehold on Jan. 30, 1979.

On Aug. 8, 2011, there was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in central Virginia that was felt more strongly in New Jersey than Friday’s quake. Back then, ceiling tiles fell at a Sears store in Middletown, and there were evacuations of high rises, hospitals, schools, casinos, and hotels in Atlantic City, according to the state Office of Emergency Management.
