Dick Vitale Blasts Transfer Portal: College Basketball World Reacts
Longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale has consistently expressed his disapproval over what the transfer portal has done to college athletics.
Today, Vitale went in on the portal again on Twitter, using his familiar arguments against the tool which enables players to be contacted by other programs and potentially transfer elsewhere without penalty.
PATHETIC what the TRANSFER PORTAL is doing to college sports. How is this CHAOS & CHEATING going on gr8 lessons for young ppl to DEVELOP values needed for the Game of Life . Quitting / lack of loyalty is what is happening traits that destroy ppl as they face the REAL WORLD.
Pls don’t sickened me with the wacky argument that over 1400 players transferring equates to about 50 coaches leaving .WHINING that coaches DON’T sit vs players is SOLVED EASILY by THE VBDI rule-COACH leaves Player SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO LEAVEw/o SITTING-END OF STORY!
There are a lot of people–and not just college coaches–who agree with Vitale. But the legendary commentator has also been hit with responses from those who think his stance is outdated and hypocritical.
Oh this is gonna be interesting…but truly glad you’re feeling better Dickie V! https://t.co/8BRvx0F5QS

Transfer portal and NIL madness are a direct result of the NCAA kicking the can down the road over and over. Instead of a stepped, logical approach, we were dumped into this scenario when the past situation finally hit critical mass. https://t.co/ms4AFHsgyI

Mr Vitale you are a hero of mine for all you have done and been through. You show me where the NCAA cares for the well being of College Athletes, the coaches and administrators care for the college athletes and I will buy in!! You know that the number who care is small. $$$$$$$$$ https://t.co/lyDTz1ex8e

Has nothing to do with coaches leaving. Coaches are pushing kids to the portal in droves in hopes of landing some “proven” talent. Plenty of coaches no longer want to develop a kid and instead want to go find someone who already had that work invested in them by someone else.

It’s a new era Dickie V. This is actually very common in “real” life as well. Employees leave cushy jobs for better opportunities every day. In many ways, the transfer portal is a microcosm of what life has become. The balance of power has tipped in favor of players AKA employees

You can’t name a single job in the entire US where you can’t leave for a better opportunity when you want but you expect college athletes to do that. It’s over. About time.

love Dickie V, but he’s wrong here. young people change schools and change jobs all the time. that’s not a lack of character or lack of values. college athletes aren’t exempt from the right to seek out a better situation for themselves. https://t.co/2UrCEkuwm8

You’re right Dick, coaches should be able to move around all they want to better their situation but god forbid a 19 year old do the same to pursue their dream https://t.co/1FjoaZ1lqD

THis continues to be one of the worst takes in sports. Coaches can bounce, but players cant? In a billion dollar industry that treats kids as property and money making servants? Get lost. Loyalty does not exist https://t.co/3c6UpRIDd7

Pathetic what the coaching carousel is doing to college sports. Coaches not even staying for bowl games, great lessons being taught to young ppl to develop values needed for life. Quitting and lack of loyalty smh.
There I fixed it Mr. Vitale https://t.co/1SLcOgdVOC— Adrian Herrera (@adrianbherrera) April 19, 2022
As of today, there are reportedly over 1,200 players in the portal. Is that number probably a little over the top? Sure, and there’s no doubt that the portal has seismically altered the landscape of college basketball.
However, there are also plenty of benefits to it. There was a need for more player mobility and empowerment in college athletics, and the amount of portal movement entices fans to follow their teams on more of a year-round basis.
Also, it makes things interesting in terms of how coaches plan on building their rosters. Will they go for more long-term planning and focus on securing and developing high school recruits? Or do they opt for a quick fix from the portal, or perhaps a mixture of both strategies?
Like it or not, the portal isn’t going anywhere.
