Legendary ESPN college basketball announcer Dick Vitale is undergoing vocal cord surgery today at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The 82-year-old Vitale has not broadcast any games this season due to health reasons. After undergoing cancer treatments last year, he was diagnosed with pre-cancerous Dysplasia on the vocal cords back in December.

Last night, Vitale revealed he was having surgery today, calling it his “national championship.”

“Need rest before reporting to Mass General Hospital for surgery on my vocal cords at 7:30 AM,” he tweeted. “My biggest fear due to my age is the anesthesia. Let’s face it for me tomorrow is my NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 🙏🙏🙏 success will get me at courtside & that is the best medicine I can get.”

Vitale’s surgery was set to begin around 11:30 a.m. ET.

Hopefully Vitale will have a positive update for us later today. We’re certainly wishing him the best.

It would be great to see Dickie V healthy and back on the sideline broadcasting in 2022-23.
