550 flights canceled at Dallas-Fort Worth & Love Field; Southwest grounds 12% routes
Nearly 550 flights have been canceled in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field as of Monday afternoon as a massive winter storm is coating most of Texas in ice.
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is experiencing the most cancellations and delays: 1 in 8 flights on Southwest were scrapped Monday.
As of 4 p.m., DFW is seeing 150 cancellations of departing flights, or about 17% of scheduled takeoffs, according to FlightAware. About 108 flights out of Love Field have canceled.
Meanwhile, nearly 300 flights to Dallas-area airports weren’t happening.
Denver and Austin airports also are seeing dozens of cancellations Monday.
Southwest, which operates out of Love Field, is still recovering from its flight cancellation fiasco over the holidays that could cost the carrier as much as $825 million.
As of 4 p.m., Southwest Airlines had canceled 12% of its scheduled routes, which is more than 480 flights, according to FlightAware. Another 740 flights for Southwest were delayed.
Travelers on Monday took to Twitter to complain about Southwest’s last-minute cancellations.
@SouthwestAir so I used the credit given to me as sorry for canceling my flight during holidays to fly today and again, we have a plane, we have a pilot but no agents to load the plane delayed 2 hours @SouthwestAir #failure pic.twitter.com/cZSdB3gYCK

Looks like @SouthwestAir just continues to drop the ball. Over 1 hour past our departure time and no one has given us any updates or told us what is going on. Apparently we have a plane with no pilot may finally be time to find a new airline for west coast travel

THE LATEST: Conditions deteriorating rapidly Monday as ice grips North Texas
American Airlines, based in Fort Worth, has canceled 200 total flights across all routes, or 6%.
Freezing rain and sleet are hitting most of North Texas, starting in earnest Monday afternoon and lingering into Wednesday. Parts of the region were already seeing ice before sunrise Monday, causing hundreds of crashes.
DFW Airport is actively monitoring the weather forecast and is making the necessary preparations for the potential of winter weather this week. Customers should check with their airline before coming to the airport for the latest status of their flight. pic.twitter.com/lpbaScsC94
