Devil May Cry Is Getting A New Anime Series

Devil May Cry new anime Dante

We seem to be in a bit of a golden age of animated video game adaptations. The excellent Castlevania just wrapped up in 2021, and its spinoff series Castlevania: Nocturne releases tomorrow. The first Onimusha anime trailer was amazing, showing that Netflix really has a knack for this kind of thing. And now, a new Devil May Cry anime series is in the works.

The new anime series was announced during Netflix’s Drop 01 presentation, alongside a host of other announcements and new details for the streamer’s upcoming animated series. Honestly, we didn’t get much of a look at the Devil May Cry series, just a brief teaser, but boy, what a teaser.

In it, we saw Dante, the Devil Hunter himself, showing off a little bit, brandishing his iconic guns and doing all sorts of silly flips. We kind of get the feeling that Dante was a little bit younger than we see him portrayed in most media, along the lines of his Devil May Cry 3 appearance, and his slick new outfit helps contribute to that vibe — it’s hard to say for sure, though.

The new series is being animated by Studio Mir, a Korean animation studio best known for its work on Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel series, The Legend of Korra. Some would say that being animated by a Korean studio means it’s not actually anime, but at a certain point you’re just splitting hairs — animation is animation, no matter what you call it.

Adi Shankar, who helped create the Castlevania animated series, is signed on as executive producer, while the writing duties will be handled by Alex Larson, of Yasuke fame. On paper it all sounds pretty fantastic, and the short clip we saw definitely helped sell the excitement.

This isn’t the first Devil May Cry anime to be produced, though it is the first in a long while. The last series, called Devil May Cry: The Animated Series in the west (very creative name), premiered in 2007, and ran for 12 episodes. That one was produced by Madman, and while it was pretty good, it definitely shows its age these days.

No release date has been set for the new Devil May Cry series, but it will be released exclusively on Netflix at some point in the future.
