Game notes: Last time out did not go well for starting pitcher Casey Mize.

The 27-year-old righty was chased in just the second inning against the Kansas City Royals, allowing six earned runs and nine hits on just 52 pitches.

"Really rough day," Mize said after the May 21 loss. "I was a little bit too much over the plate. They were hitting the ball all over the yard. I'm pretty disappointed. I let the team down today. Obviously, I needed to cover some innings after yesterday the bullpen did a lot of work. Really disappointed with myself for letting us down today."

The good news for Mize is he won't have to face Bobby Witt Jr., who went 3-4 on the day with two home runs that went 425-plus feet.

Mize has been a lot less consistent in May than he was in the month prior. In April, Mize finished the month with a 3.08 ERA and looked to be rounding into form, but two really rough outings – first against the New York Yankees and then the aforementioned Royals game – have ballooned Mize's ERA to 6.63 this month. Sandwiched in between the rough starts for Mize were two impressive outings, giving up just one run against the Houston Astros and two runs to the Miami Marlins.

When he takes the mound Sunday, Mize will be looking for his first win since April 21 when he and the Tigers knocked off the Minnesota Twins, 6-1.

After the Tigers and Blue Jays wrap up their series Sunday, the Tigers will have an off day on Memorial Day before hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates for a two-game series and then traveling to Boston to face the Red Sox.
