WATCH CANHA: Detroit Tigers traded for Mark Canha to teach youngsters and help win – he's doing both

Game notes: The Tigers lost a tough one, 1-0, to the Rangers in Monday's series opener.

You can't take getting to watch Casey Mize face MLB hitters for granted. Not after he went almost two full years between starts after undergoing surgeries on his throwing elbow and back. In two starts, Mize has looked about how you'd expect for an extremely talented player coming back from a long absence. He has allowed five total runs between his two starts, and at times looked unhittable and at times a little shaky. He has surrendered five hits in each of his first two appearances and issued three walks and allowed one home run between the games against the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Tigers have kept the pitch count relatively low for Mize thus far, as you may expect considering his injury history, but Mize was able to complete five innings on 83 pitches in his second start back, a game the Tigers came back to win in the ninth inning.

Meanwhile, with starting pitchers Cody Bradford, Max Scherzer and Jacob DeGrom all battling injuries, the Rangers rotation has been in a bit of a flux and they have been waiting to name starters. Right-hander Jon Gray was named Tuesday's started after Monday night's game.

After Tuesday's showdown, the Tigers will have two more games against the defending World Series champion Rangers, before heading to Minnesota on Friday to face the Twins for three games.
