MUCH NEEDED HITTING: Detroit Tigers' Wenceel Pérez is proving it's possible for rookies to hit in big leagues

Game notes: In his last start, Casey Mize allowed just two runs, two hits and one walk while striking out six batters ... and wasn't even close to getting a win.

Along with fellow starter Reese Olson, Mize felt the pain of the Tigers' hitters going completely cold over the back end of their series with the Miami Marlins.

By the time the Marlins' third batter of the day came up to the plate last Wednesday, the team had already scored two runs against Mize. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the first to face Mize and delivered with a single. Bryan De La Cruz was next up and hit a home run 422 feet to center field. It was about as rough of a start to a game as you could imagine, but Mize showed a lot of fortitude and locked back in. The rest of the outing, the Marlins didn't get another hit vs. Mize.

It was an impressive showing of grit that Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell even would have admired, but it wasn't enough to get his second win of the season. The start prior, Mize had similarly bad luck, giving up just one run on a solo home run but not getting the victory after the bullpen let the game slip away as the team lost, 5-2.

The positive takeaway? Mize has been pitching well! His first start in May was his worst of the year, giving up five runs in a loss on the road to the New York Yankees, but other than that, Mize has been consistently giving the Tigers a chance to win. Other than the Yankees outing, Mize has allowed three runs or less in all of his starts. Out of his eight starts, he's given up two earned runs or less in six of them, which is good enough for five quality starts.

Much like Tigers fans everywhere, Mize will be hoping the series in Arizona will serve as a turning point for an offense that got off to a dire start in May, because if he keeps pitching like he has been, he'll start racking up wins sooner than later.

After Tuesday's game, the Tigers wrap up their series with the Royals with an afternoon game against the Royals before heading back to Comerica Park for a new series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
