Detroit Symphony Orchestra performing Friday in Monroe

MONROE — The Detroit Symphony Orchestra returns to Monroe Friday.

The orchestra's two-hour Monroe performance, "Ravel's 'Mother Goose,'" will begin at 8 p.m. April 19 in the La-Z-Boy Center, Meyer Theater at Monroe County Community College, 1555 S. Raisinville Road.

Selections include Jacques Ibert's "Hommage a Mozart"; Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major"; Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Sinfonietta"; and Maurice Ravel's "Suite from Ma mère l'oye (Mother Goose)."

Pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason will perform.

"Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, already called 'a deft and expressive soloist,' makes her DSO debut with a concerto Mozart likely premiered himself," the DSO said. "The program continues with a piece Ibert wrote for Mozart’s birthday and Villa-Lobos exploring the possibilities of Mozart’s themes through his 'Sinfonietta.' Spinning stories into exquisite sounds, Ravel brings out the electric drama of fairy tales in 'Mother Goose.'"

Simone Menezes will conduct the orchestra in Monroe.

The William Davidson Neighborhood Series brings the DSO to neighboring cities. Other stops in the series this year are in Southfield and Beverly Hills. The DSO's final MCCC concert this season is set for 8 p.m. June 14.
