New Detroit-style lager saluting 'Arsenal of Democracy' to release ahead of Memorial Day

In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt bestowed the nickname "Arsenal of Democracy" to Detroit for the city's vigorous and undying war efforts. Now, that nickname is being reused for a new Detroit-style lager.

Detroit Liquid Ventures is unveiling the new beer, modeled after historic lagers produced by Detroit’s thriving pre-Prohibition era breweries, just in time for Memorial Day at the Detroit Athletic Club’s Veteran’s Society and Special Operators Transition Foundation event and the 71st Annual St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade.

“We don’t in any way want to diminish the pride or importance of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ term to Detroiters,” says Detroit Liquid Ventures CEO Mark Rieth in a news release. “Just the opposite, in fact. We’re saluting the name and everybody who made and continues to make the effort to keep America safe. Detroit’s assembly plants played an enormous role in World War II and continue to be the backbone of American manufacturing today.”

In line with the Arsenal of Democracy launch, Detroit Liquid Ventures will support local veteran organizations as well as the Arsenal of Democracy Museum in Shelby Township, which preserves this heroic piece of Detroit’s history.

“We are thrilled to see this contemporary and visible new reminder of the Arsenal of Democracy and what it meant to Detroit, to America, and to the world,” said John Lind, a veteran of the Marine Corps, the Air Force, and the Navy, and director of the Arsenal of Democracy Museum, in a news release. “As Detroiters, we take special pride in being recognized as the Arsenal of Democracy and every time anyone drinks one of these brews they’ll be reminded of Detroit’s extraordinary role in World War II.”

The Arsenal of Democracy lager will be available in 12- and 16-ounce cans beginning Memorial Day weekend. The beer will also be served in Michigan restaurants and bars, including Ford's Garage locations in Novi and Dearborn that will feature the lager as part of their Ford heritage collection.

A non-alcoholic version of the beer is also in the works.
