Detroit People Mover unveils new lighting for NFL draft

The Detroit People Mover is expected to help light up downtown in connection with the upcoming NFL draft.

Almost a dozen of the 2.9-mile elevated transit system's support columns are slated to show off new lighting, according to an announcement.

The joint project of the People Mover, the Downtown Detroit Partnership and the City of Detroit was scheduled for unveiling Tuesday night.

"The partners will introduce the capabilities of over 40 LED lights with an official show, 'Lights Up, Larned!' demonstrating the permanent displays. Installed on nearly a dozen columns supporting the People Mover guideway track, the lighting can project single or multiple hues to feature themed colors from hometown sports teams and universities, signature brand colors and more," according to the announcement ahead of the unveiling.

The NFL draft, scheduled for April 25-27, is expected to draw an estimated 300,000 people to Detroit. The People Mover, which is free to use in 2024, is one of the options that officials have been touting as a way to navigate downtown during the event. Significant road closures are planned in the area, although some routes, including the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, are to stay open. Officials have been urging those interested in attending the festivities to choose public transit options and to plan their visit.
