The Detroit Lions will reportedly make a major roster change later this month to clear cap space, as many teams are working to do this off-season.

The Lions have reportedly informed starting cornerback Desmond Trufant that they plan to release him later this month. Doing so will clear much needed cap space for Detroit as it prioritizes other positions of need.

“Lions have informed starting CB Desmond Trufant that he will be released at the start of the league this year later this month, per source,” Schefty tweeted on Thursday.

Trufant signed a two-year deal worth $20 million ahead of the 2020 season. He was currently scheduled to count $12.5 million against the cap this season, which was going to be the third highest hit for the Lions behind Jared Goff and Trey Flowers.

At the time, the Lions’ decision to sign Desmond Trufant seemed like a good deal. Fast forward to now, it proved to be an awful signing.

Trufant hasn’t lived up to the hype during his time in Detroit. He missed plenty of time during the 2020 season because of injuries. When healthy, he didn’t exactly help the defense all too much.

The Lions will have a bit more cap space to work with now after waiving Trufant. It’ll be interesting to see how Detroit’s front office utilizes it in coming months. The organization may be in need of more and cheaper cornerback depth this off-season.
