Detroit Lions hoping to visit New York Giants for joint practices this summer

ORLANDO - The Detroit Lions and New York Giants want to run it back with joint practices in 2024.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said at the NFL's spring meetings Tuesday he and Giants coach Brian Daboll have discussed having joint practices this summer for the second straight year.

Last year, the Giants came to Allen Park for two joint practices and played the first preseason game at Ford Field. This year, Campbell said the Lions and Giants will request playing Week 1 of the preseason in New Jersey, with intentions to have joint practices before the game.

"That’s not in stone," Campbell said. "'Cause I said this last year and I know Mr. Mara (Giants owner John Mara) got on me like, 'Hey, this thing’s already out.' So there’s a chance. I don’t know if it’s going to get done or not, but we’ve been talking about it just because we wanted to reciprocate the fact they came to us, we wanted to give it to them."

The Lions held two sets of joint practices in Allen Park last season, hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars for two days of practice in Week 2 of the preseason.

Campbell said teams can only request one preseason opponent, and that he and Jaguars coach Doug Pederson decided to have joint practices last summer after the schedule was released.

Campbell said he wants the Lions to have two sets of joint practices again this summer and hopes to work with whatever opponent the Lions get in the second week of the preseason to make it happen.

Typically, the NFL releases the schedule in May.

"I would love to do two weeks again like we did last year," Campbell said. "It’ll be predicted on who that is and whether we go to them or they come to us. But yeah, I’m all for it."
