Detective Pikachu 2: Everything you need to know
Detective Pikachu 2 has been a long time coming, but it finally looks like things are in motion for the follow-up to Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.
A sequel was confirmed in January 2019, ahead of the first movie's release, but things went very quiet for a while. Even Justice Smith seemed unsure that a sequel would happen when asked about it in May 2021. "I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes. I don't think it's going to happen. I really hope so though. Honestly, I'm such a huge fan, who knows, who knows? I hope so," he said.
Well, Smith might have been right at the time, but a sequel is now happening as it was announced in March 2023 that Jonathan Krisel, co-creator of Portlandia, would direct the sequel which will be written by Chris Galletta.

Detective Pikachu 2 potential release date: When can we expect Detective Pikachu 2?
While we know a sequel is officially happening, we don't yet have a confirmed release date for Detective Pikachu 2.
The first movie was released in May 2019 after filming from January-May 2018. There's no indication that the script has even been written for the sequel, so it's unclear when the movie will start filming.
Right now, we reckon it'll probably be at least 2025 until we see the sequel, but we'd be happy to be proved wrong.
Detective Pikachu 2 cast: Who's coming back for Detective Pikachu 2?
There has been no official cast confirmations for Detective Pikachu 2, but we can assume that Justice Smith will be back as Tim Goodman.
Deadline reported in March 2023 that Ryan Reynolds will have "some part to play" in the sequel, having voiced Pikachu in the first movie and also appearing as Tim's father, Harry Goodman.
The end of the first movie revealed that the reason Tim could hear Detective Pikachu was because Mewtwo had transferred Harry's consciousness into the Pokémon to save him. With the danger gone, Mewtwo restored Harry to his human form and Pikachu is back on the adorable "pika, pika" dialogue.
So, if anything, Reynolds might just have a cameo role to play as Harry, unless they contrive a way to get Pikachu back sounding like Deadpool.
Other potential returnees include Kathryn Newton as Lucy Stevens, a journalist who helps out on the case, and Ken Watanabe as Harry Goodman's friend Detective Yoshida.
Detective Pikachu 2 plot: What will Detective Pikachu 2 be about?
At this moment in time, we don't really know what form the sequel will take, but we reckon it'll be very different to the first.
Harry has been restored, so the sequel could see Tim and Harry solve crimes together, while Pikachu and the other Pokémon remain voiceless. But that would rob the sequel of what makes the first movie such a joy.
Could it be a spin-off set in the wider world of Ryme City? We just don't know at this point.
