Detective Conan Is Getting A Trading Card Game And I Can’t Wait

I have a deep, dark secret: I love trading card games. All trading card games. Digital, physical, whatever — if it’s a trading card game I want to be a part of it. I’ve spent an obscene amount of money on Pokémon trading cards, I have a huge collection of Magic: The Gathering cards, and just last week I bought some One Piece cards.
I don’t even know how to play most of them, I just like seeing all the cards. So imagine my joy upon learning that Detective Conan, one of my favorite anime series – albeit one I have minimal experience with – is getting a trading card game.
Detective Conan’s trading card game, officially called the Detective Conan Card Game – very creative – has been announced to be launching on May 4, 2024, as reported by ANN. That’s a great date, because it’s also Conan’s birthday, so it all connects in a nice way, although it seems like that’s just the Japanese release date.
Five starter decks will be released at launch: Conan Edogawa, the main man himself, alongside Heiji Hattori, Kaito Kid, Shuichi Akai, and Tooru Amuro. Sadly there’s no Ai Habara deck at launch, but we imagine it’s only a matter of time — she is the best character after all.
Little is known about the upcoming card game beyond this. We don’t know how it’s played, how many cards will be in its first set, or if it’ll ever see a localized release outside of Japan. On that last one, we think it’s very unlikely, as despite a recent uptick in popularity, Detective Conan hasn’t really kicked off in the West yet.
Still, it joins a long list of anime-based trading card games, including One Piece, Dragon Ball, Digimon, and so many more. The difference, of course, is that Detective Conan doesn’t really tend to have that much in the way of combat, although action scenes are certainly aplenty. It’ll be interesting to see just how much a trading card game can squeeze out of the series and its characters.
