New details: Diver hit by Miami-Dade police boat during lobster miniseason

On the opening day of lobster miniseason, a two-day event that draws a sizable mariner crowd, a diver was injured by a Miami-Dade police boat. New details have been released on how exactly the two collided.

Around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, officers German Alech, Ricaurte Lugo and Gregory Truitt stopped a 28-foot boat that wasn’t anchored and drifting about 2.5 miles from Boca Chita Key, a Florida Fish and Wildlife incident form read.

As both boats drifted, James Ramsay Covey, a 39-year-old from Coral Gables, was snorkeling in the nearby waters.

The officers finished their business and began to leave, but then Covey was struck by the patrol boat’s engines, the report read.

He was given first aid by the officers and then airlifted to Jackson South Hospital. His current condition is unknown.

Miami-Dade police could not be immediately reached, but at the time of the incident the department said it would not comment on the case as the FWC investigate.
