Derek Carr’s time with Raiders nears an end. A year-by-year look back at his career

Derek Carr’s tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders is coming to an end.

Carr posted his farewell on social media Thursday morning, thanking the many people who supported him since he joined the Raiders in 2014. He was drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft.

Carr took the Raiders to two playoff appearances, though he didn’t see action in his first postseason because of a broken ankle

There were plenty of bright moments for Carr, but also that somber Christmas eve game against the Indianapolis Colts in 2016 when he went down with a season-ending injury.

He motioned to the sideline “it’s broke.”

The Coliseum was quiet. He waved to the crowd as he exited on a cart.

It was a tough one for Carr and the Raiders because the franchise was on a hot streak that season and he was an MVP candidate.

Carr recovered and was a reliable starter with some clutch moments in his nine seasons, even as the team churned through head coaches (six), offensive coordinators (four, with one of them, Greg Olson, serving two different stints) and general managers (three) in a mostly unsuccessful search for a winning combination.

He finishes as the Raiders’ career leader in passing yards (35,222), touchdowns (217) and completions (3,201). Carr also had 28 fourth-quarter comebacks and 33 game-winning drives.

Carr played for head coaches Dennis Allen, Tony Soprano, Jack Del Rio, Jon Gruden, Rich Bisaccia and Josh McDaniels; offensive coordinators Greg Olson, Bill Musgrave, Todd Downing and Mick Lombardi.

The Bee takes a look at his time with the Raiders:

2014: Carr was named the starter by then-head coach Dennis Allen. The Raiders started off the season 0-10 before beating the hated Kansas City Chiefs 24-20 on a rainy night in Oakland.

2016: It got even better for the Raiders with Carr in command. Chants of MVP could be heard during the season as the Raiders aimed for a top-seed battle with New England. Big wins include an OT win over Tampa Bay — Carr to Seth Roberts. He tied for third for the AP MVP award and was named to his second Pro Bowl. He was second in the NFL with seven fourth-quarter comebacks and set the NFL record with five game-winning TD passes in the fourth quarter or overtime.

2017: It was a third straight Pro Bowl for Carr as he finished the season with 3,496 passing yards with 22 TDs and 13 interceptions. One of the highlights was a 31-30 win over the Kansas City Chiefs when he connected with Michael Crabtree with no time remaining. He topped 14,000 career passing yards, becoming just the 10th quarterback in NFL history to exceed that milestone in his first four years. He also became the fourth quarterback in franchise history to throw for at least 100 TDs, in just 60 games, the quickest in franchise history and becoming the fifth quarterback in NFL history to throw 100 TDs in his first four seasons. His 103 TDs ranked fourth through a player’s first four seasons.

2018: Carr and the Raiders welcomed Jon Gruden as their next head coach. Even though the Raiders finished 4-12, Carr had a decent season as he passed for 4,049 yards with 19 TDs against 10 INTs for a passer rating of 93.9. It was his first 4,000-yard season. He set a franchise record for most consecutive games without an INT (10) and most consecutive passes without an INT (332). His streak of 332 consecutive pass attempts without an interception stands as the third-longest in NFL history. Carr was the quickest Raider to surpass 15,000 career yards and just the fourth overall in the club history to reach the mark. He even broke QB Peyton Manning’s record for most completions through a player’s first five seasons with 1,759.

2020: Another 4,000-yard season for Carr — he finished with 4,103 and a passer rating of 101.4 in leading the Raiders to an 8-8 record. It was the second-best passer rating in franchise history, trailing Ken Stabler’s 103.4 passer rating set in 1976. He became the seventh quarterback in league history to record 170 TD passes through his first seven seasons, and also broke an NFL record for most fourth-quarter comebacks (21) through a player’s first seven seasons.

Amid the off-field distractions, Carr finished with 4,804 yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He set career and franchise records with 4,804 passing yards and 428 completions.
