Demolition began Monday of a former office building in Detroit's New Center area to make way for a planned $2.2 billion Henry Ford Hospital expansion.

The building at 2850 W. Grand Blvd. dates to the 1950s and formerly contained the corporate headquarters of Health Alliance Plan. HAP's headquarters has since moved to Troy. The building is owned by WIN Properties of Rye Brook, New York.

The health system says it expects the demolition and ensuing cleanup to take several months.

A groundbreaking for the hospital expansion — including a new 21-story hospital tower — is expected to happen later this year. The new buildings are expected to open in 2029.

The expansion project is one segment of a $3 billion collaborative development involving Henry Ford Health, Michigan State University and the Pistons organization, which, in addition to the hospital tower, will include 662 apartments and a medical research center.
